Hell is a lake of fire.
That's what I've always heard.
I can feel the heat from that lake as I stand on the banks. I see the burning bodies as they jump and scream, try to escape. Their flesh melts off their bones and falls away in pieces. The grotesque scene before me is what nightmares are made of. I know I should be terrified, but for some reason, I'm not. Instead, I'm intrigued.
I take a step forward, feeling the heat from the lake lick at my skin. I don't feel any pain though. It's like I'm immune to it. In fact, I feel more alive than ever before.
As I take each step, I see faces of the damned. Some I recognize, while others are strangers, but they all have one thing in common. They are consumed by the flames, and there's no escaping it.
There is a floating island above the lake. It floats to the center, then around the perimeter, promising solace and peace to whomever can jump high enough to reach its shores. The edges of it are made from the softest white sand. The individual grains glitter with golden sparkles, reflecting the molten colors from below.
The ground turns from fine sand to thick, lush grass. I can smell fresh spring water and hear its babbling brook coming from further in. I smell the trees and hear the cool air rustling their leaves.
I take a step towards that island. Wanting nothing more than to rise to the top and feel what it's like to be in paradise. Those burning, tortured souls kick through the fire with all their might, raising the nubs left on their melted hands to try to grasp it.
But it always remains just out of reach.
I take another step towards the island, the brittle ground beneath me turning sharp like broken glass the closer I get to the lake. A piece of it stabs through my boots and spears into the bottom of my foot. I cry out and hunch over, gritting my teeth and hissing as I pull it free and throw it into the distance.
I look down at the blood streaming from the sole of my boots, gasping as the gray jagged rocks absorb it and hum with a growl. I need to stay on the bank, need to put distance between myself and that jagged rock and lake of fire. But I can't stop looking at the island.
If I could make it, I would be ok.
I know it.
The screaming and scent of roasted flesh haunts me, reminding me of the danger at hand. I spin around, looking for an end to this world.
To this hell.
The gray dusty earth with cracks in its surface spans as far as the eye can see. The lake stretches forever in the other direction, a waterfall feeding it to the far side. A black, swirling portal opens up several feet away from me and moves over the fire.
I step back in horror as a large figure emerges from the portal.
